Rules Of Use: Wearing Makeup with Glasses

We’ve all seen the movies: the ugly duckling undergoes a dramatic makeover and is turned into the most beautiful, most popular girl at school. And what’s the first thing to go during the makeover: the glasses.

Fortunately, this aversion to glasses is waning as specs become more stylish and less, well, Napoleon Dynamite-esque. Today, glasses can be more of a fashion accessory than just a piece of health-related gear. In fact, many style lovers have begun sporting clear lenses and it’s never been more popular to look like a “nerd”.

Now that wearing glasses in public is socially acceptable, it’s time to understand what makeup techniques work. Because most lenses tend to have a magnifying effect for your eyes, or at least draw more attention to those baby-blues, read on to learn to how to really make them stand out!

Less is More
People typically load on the eye makeup believing that they need to compensate for the fact that their eyes are taking a backseat to their glasses. Not the case. Lenses typically magnify your eyes and thick frames draw added attention to them. So for eye makeup with glasses, less is definitely more.

Be sure to match your skin tone and take care to blend any lines as mistakes will be more noticeable behind glasses. Banish the under-eye circles with a high-quality concealer. Head to your local beauty store and take the time to get your perfect skin tone match from a beauty consultant. The price is worth it.

Work with Your Frames
Let your cute frames do the talking for you! If you have thick or colourful frames, tone down your makeup and stick with neutral colours. Line your upper and lower lids with soft black or brown eyeliner. If you’re going to wear shadow, reach for nudes, beiges, or other neutral hues.

If you’re sporting thick, colourful frames, be sure to balance this burst of colour by wearing a rich colour on your lips. No need to match the hue—bright purple frames do NOT give you the go-ahead to wear bright purple lipstick—but do pump up the colour a bit.

How to Go Rimless
If your glasses don’t have frames, you can play-up your eyes a little more. Feel free to try bolder shadows like gray or bronze. Smudge your eyeliner for a more dramatic look and add an extra coat of mascara—though stick with volumizing mascara as opposed to lengthening so you’re not brushing them against your lenses.

Nix the Glitter

Stick to a neutral colour palette if you’re going to wear eye shadow. Avoid frosty or glitter shadows have a metallic sheen that may compete with the reflective nature of your lenses. Plus, many of these types of eye shadows tend to flake, leaving you with a makeup mess on your frames.

Reduce Smudging
Speaking of a makeup mess, getting makeup on your lenses or frames can be frustrating and can ruin your look. To reduce smudging, avoid powder shadows. Use cream or waterproof eye shadows instead, as they’re less likely to flake. Women with long lashes should curl their lashes and apply a volumizing mascara. Curling them will keep lashes from brushing the lenses and irritating your eyes. Finally, let all liquid makeup thoroughly dry before putting on your glasses.

Non-Makeup Tips
If you have a hard time seeing without your glasses, purchase a pair of inexpensive magnifier specs to wear while you apply makeup. If you can apply without specs, be sure to try them on a few times as you apply makeup to see if any adjustment is needed. Your eyebrows frame your face and well, your frames, so be sure those brows are well groomed. Finally, wear sunglasses! Squinting in the sun and years of sun damage will lead to fine lines and wrinkles, stock up on shades for the beach!

Bottom line: less is truly more. Don’t fall prey to the common misconception that wearing glasses means you need to pile on the makeup. Keep it simple!

My Take: Matrix Biolage Deep Smoothing Serum

Matrix Biolage Deep Smoothing Serum
What It Claims
Biolage Smoothing serum smoothes dry, frizzy, and unruly hair. A fusion of taming polymers and avocado and grape seed oils gently envelopes hair to control frizz and seal in smoothness without weight. Hair stays shiny, nourished, and manageable all day.

How To Use
Work a small amount of product in hands and apply evenly through damp hair. Blow-dry or style as desired. Can be re-applied throughout the day for added shine and frizz control.

Price
Rs. 255 for 100 ml

The Good
  • The serum is pretty light weight and does not weigh down your hair irrespective of the amount you use.
  • Makes hair easy to manage when applied on wet hair and helps get rid of tangles.
  • Decently priced for a serum.
  • Has a lovely fresh scent to it.
  • Did not make my hair overly oily despite using copious amounts(?)
  • Works great as a heat protection serum before using hot styling equipments.
The Bad
  • It helps sort out frizz but after a while the effect wears off.
  • If you have extremely dry hair the serum won't work.Which is disappointing since it's meant to be a smoothing serum.Once I applied almost a quarter of a bottle to my hair (after trying to sleep in braids to get curls) and it just wouldn't calm down the frizzes.
  • Does not make my hair look or feel glossy or shiny.I had highlights done on my hair recently and the ends sometimes look dry and straw like(what happens after a combination of colour and rebonding chemicals).Every time I use the serum expecting it to give some life to the dry ends it fails.
  • It might be decently priced for a serum but way overpriced for a hair product that does not live up to its claims.

Matrix Biolage Deep Smoothing Serum
Love It Or Chuck It
I started using the serum when I had just gotten rebonding done and at that time it worked just fine.I guess because my hair was super smooth to begin with. But after my natural hair started growing back, this serum was rendered absolutely useless, courtesy my crazily frizzy actual mane.If you have sleek and smooth hair to start with, the serum might work for you but for coarser, drier hair it won't do anything and if you have fine hair it will simply make your hair limp. The serum itself is pretty runny and light weight maybe just a bit too much. And ever since I have discovered the Dove Nourishing Oil Care Serum, this one has been Chucked right off my hair care shelf. In fact the entire Biolage range has been a colossal disappointment. Definitely not worth a repurchase.

London Looks: Makeup Trends Straight From The Catwalk

Want to get the London look this spring? Then follow the hair and make-up trends as seen at the S/S London Fashion Week shows. The look for spring is fresh, sweet, and well, spring-like with three key trends evident on the catwalks.

Sweet and Sugary

Sweet and Sugary
There were plenty of sweet and sugary looks to match the pastel palettes favoured by many of the designers this season. Sky blue at Mary Katrantzou and candy pink at Kinder Aggugini fed the make-up trends in London. Get the look with a dewy face and flash of apricot blush to the cheeks for a warming, youthful glow as seen at Christopher Kane. Big eyebrows are still the way to go and are the focal point of the face. Bold and boyish brows are the key words of the season, as seen at Erdem, sketch in the arches two to three shades darker than your hair colour and make them big. Finish with lightly pulled back hair either in a vintage rolled style, or a scruffy bun as seen at Kinder Aggugini.

Wet Grunge

Wet Grunge
In keeping with the aquatic mood at some of the shows, mermaid-like models were sent down the catwalk. It is a simple, but subtly sexy look great for after dark. There was a distinct lack of heavy lips, as designers such as RoksandaIlinic instead opted for nude, natural shades. This makes way for a focus on the eyes and hair which are inspired by romantic grunge. Smokey eyes follow through from winter, with make-up artists resolutely opting for a vintage oval shaped eye. Stylists then drenched hair in product for a wet-look effect.

Natural and Nude

Natural and Nude
Again, in keeping with the neutral and white shades on the catwalks, make-up artists opted for a nude beauty look. Tinted moisturisers and blemish balms are your friend this season, as prepping skin for a flawless finish becomes part of your daily routine. Hair should be freshly washed and blow dried for a very British light and wafty look as seen at Burberry and Jaeger.

Fashion Essentials: What To Wear On Your First Date

There is a lot of pressure to dress well for a first date; after all you only get one first impression! Picking out an outfit for your first date is especially difficult when you are not sure what your date is wearing. Overdressing can lead to an awkward, or even uncomfortable, start to your date. However, you certainly don’t want to under dress. Luckily for you, we have you covered with some tips for an appropriate outfit. Below is an example of what you should wear for the most common type of first date: dinner followed by a movie.

What To Wear On Your First Date
Layering is a popular fashion trend this year, and we make sure to incorporate it into almost every outfit. A simple top or blouse with a blazer is stylish and doesn't require much effort. If the restaurant or movie theater is cold, you will have an extra layer for warmth. On the other hand, you can take off your blazer and still look stylish if either of the venues is warm. All you need is a simple pair of jeans to wear with the outfit to complete this effortless, yet casual look. Since its winter, a nice pair of boots will go great with this outfit; however you can opt for a pair of regular heels as well.

It’s important not to forget the accessories; they truly complete an outfit. A simple clutch should hold everything you need for evening and is a great accompaniment to the outfit. A pair of stylish sunglasses goes well with any outfit; just make sure to take them off indoors. Dressing for a first date is really this easy! This simple, yet casual look encompasses the latest trends to show your date you’re stylish while looking great!

Top Tips for Shopping Safely Online

Modern day living means that many people do not have the time to scour the high streets and shopping centres looking for what they want, which is why so many of them do the bulk of their shopping online.
The growth of the internet has made life so much easier for many of us, but its sheer size also means that you need to take care if you want to enjoy safe online shopping. If you are looking for unique clothing for instance, from high-end retailers you’re likely to find much better prices available online than off. If you are new to the idea of online shopping then you might welcome some top tips for shopping safely online.

Tip 1: Check the Company is Registered
These days anyone with a domain name, web-hosting services and a little knowledge can set themselves up with an online business, which is why you need to dig a little deeper if you want to be sure of their credibility. All legitimate companies should be registered at Companies House or on the Whois database and you should be able to check this out online. Before you buy from an online supplier make sure that you have the company’s full name, address and telephone number.

Tip 2: Check Their Terms and Their Reputation
Before you buy anything, whether online or off, you should check out the company’s terms and conditions to make sure there is nothing there that undermines your rights as a buyer. You should ask for a complete price breakdown so that you know exactly how much you are paying, including VAT. You should also seek out details of delivery charges and expected delivery dates.

It’s worth Googling the company name before you buy as it will give you an idea of what other shoppers think of their service. Stay away from flame sites; i.e. those websites where people say what they like, whether or not it has a basis in truth. Just do a general search to find out whether there are more satisfied customers than there are complaints.

Tip 3: Make Sure They Accept Credit Card Payments
It is much safer to pay by credit card when you shop online because the credit card company will make a refund if your details are accessed. Always choose a website that has a padlock symbol in the bottom left corner as this indicates that it’s safe to use your credit card on that particular site. While there’s no guarantee that the site is genuine, your credit card data is encrypted so it can’t be accessed by anyone else.

Tip 4: Check Out Your Cancellation Rights
While it may be easier to obtain stylish pieces of unique clothing from retail outlets online, you cannot try before you buy and it is for this reason that internet shoppers have cancellation rights. Cancellation rights mean that you are legally entitled to return most goods within seven days and enjoy a complete refund even if there is nothing wrong with the goods – you may, however be asked to pay the return delivery costs.

My Take: The Body Shop Nail Polishing Block

Review The Body Shop Nail Polishing Block
What It Claims
It's nails by number with this four-step buffer. Leaves nails smooth, shiny, and ready for a pretty polish.Follow the numbers on each side for perfect nails.

How To Use

Review The Body Shop Nail Polishing Block
Use the black side to file your nails into shape

Review The Body Shop Nail Polishing Block
Use the green side to help smooth away ridges from the surface of the nails

Review The Body Shop Nail Polishing Block
Use the grey side to help buff the nails

Review The Body Shop Nail Polishing Block
Use the white side to add a natural-looking sheen to the surface of the nails

Price
Rs 195

The Good
  • An awesome multitasker. One block files, buffs and polishes nails.
  • The best thing about the block is that it shines up your nails within seconds and I'm not talking regular shine but sparkles as if you have used a transparent nail coat like shine.
  • And the shine stays for at least a week without having to worry about chipping or flaking.
  • It actually removes ridges to give your nails a super smooth surface.
  • It removes minor stains from polishes, nothing major but it still does. And also prevents yellowing of nails since it forms a layer while polishing which acts as a barrier to which the polish sticks.
  • The barrier also ensures the polish sticks on better and lasts longer.
  • Small enough to carry easily in your handbag for on the go nail TLC.
  • Way better than using nails polishes since it does the same job minus the chemicals.
The Bad
  • The surfaces are basically sandpapers of different grits so they do wear out and become less effective over time.
  • Gets dirty really quickly and cleaning is a bit tricky.
  • Expensive.Effective yeah but still the 200 buck price tag does pinch.
  • If you use it more than once a week, it becomes less effective not to mention it makes nails really thin out and become more brittle. So I suggest using it about once every fortnight.
Love It Or Chuck It
This baby is my fail safe way of getting perfect glossy nails without having to bother with nail paints. So obviously Love It.I use it once every 2 weeks to keep my nails looking healthy and glowing(if that's possible). It is a must in my Lazy Girl manicure kit.

PS: I know pictures of my nails would have helped but for some weird reason my camera was not picking up the shine so I gave up, but trust me it works.

5 Forgotten Secrets to Get Rid of Acne

acne-1
Despite modern medical advances, acne is one problem that still suffers from a lot of misinformation and myths. Perhaps it's due to the amount of commercials for products that claim to be able to give you overnight results. If you were to believe their claims, product companies would have you thinking that it's possible to load your face up with cream and get rid of acne in just a few days. While there are definitely some great products on the market, there is still no universal cure that will solve the situation within just one week. It's important to remember that the visible blemishes you see now are a result of complex processes that started a few weeks ago. That means most people are rushing towards fast acting answers for something that is beyond their control. Here are some often-forgotten elements to keep in mind to give yourself a more comprehensive solution to acne.

Give Your Skin A Break - Rather than bombarding your face with various treatments and constantly obsessing about the problem, it's important to let your skin heal naturally as well. You have to remember that acne creams are not exactly conducive for general skin health. Many of them are actually trying to counteract what happens naturally on your skin. The result is a lot of stress and pressure due to excessive treatment that can eventually aggravate the situation. It's important to find a careful balance between going full force and knowing when to pull back so that you give your skin a break.

Drink Lots Of Water - A very simple step that most people seem to neglect is keeping their skin hydrated on a variety of levels. It's important to find a good moisturizing product in addition to keep yourself dehydrated internally as well. There is nothing simpler than making sure that you drink plenty of water each day and maintain a good hydration routine. Water is also preferable to other beverages that may contain too much caffeine or sugar for your system.

Get Plenty Of Sleep - Have you ever stayed up just a little bit too long or cut your sleep short only to develop breakouts? This is a common occurrence that happens for a variety of reasons. Sleep is the stage during which your skin heals and it produces the least amount of oil during this time. If you deprive yourself of sleep, you can be putting a lot of pressure on your skin which can eventually make things worse. Sleep is also the perfect stage for your chosen acne medication to absorb into your skin, so make sure that you get full use from your products by applying them right before you go to bed.

Reduce Stress - It's not just pollutants and toxins that you have to worry about, your skin can suffer from stress as well. We are living in an incredibly stressful time and people have a lot of worries on their mind. Constantly suffering from anxiety about daily life or specific events can take a toll on your appearance. Remember, your skin needs the occasional break and benefits from reduced stress levels. It's well-known that oil production is provoked when you're stressed out, and this can affect you throughout the course of any given day. This can definitely help out when you're dealing with how to get rid of blackheads which is heavily related to excess oil on your face.

Diet And Exercise - While eating oily foods and chocolate might not lead directly to acne, a healthy diet can certainly benefit your skin. It's important to remember that food is responsible for nourishing your skin and replenishing lost minerals and vitamins. A healthy diet helps to keep your body in check while making sure everything is in perfect order. The same can be said for daily exercise that helps to keep your circular system regulated as well. There are internal factors at play such as hormones and free radicals that can be kept in check with a good amount of exercise. Remember, taking care of your entire body ends up benefiting your skin on the whole. While improving your eating patterns and exercise habits aren't going to get rid of your pimples alone, they can definitely make your chosen treatment a lot more effective.

A Lazy Girl's Guide To No Fuss Instant Home Manicure

short nails celebrity
My whole life I have only got my nails done at the salon once and that too for free (inaugural freebie). Not because I hate spending money on manicures (which I sort of do, I'd rather buy expensive nails paints) but I find getting nails done really pretentious.

Home Manicures on the other hand are cheap and after reading this guide super quick and easy.Just the sort of thing a lazy girl looks for!

Out With Filing Your Nails And In With Trimming Them Off
Who has the time or patience to file nails to get them in perfect shape.Yeah filed nails do look great, but short nails have been in vogue for the last couple of seasons so stow away the filers and bring out the cutters.
Start by trimming off the centre of the nail starting from the top of the nail bed, straight across and then use a 45 degree angle to trim off the sides to give a rounded edge.Nails this short have no need to be filed.

Diss Soapy Water For Plain Water
So ideally the next step after filing your nails is soaking your hands in warm soapy water, but we are looking at a lazy girl's way of doing things. So apply a rich cream or body butter liberally all over your hands concentrating the cream on your nails specially the cuticles and soak your hands for a couple of minutes in the hottest water your hand can withstand (be really careful with the temp of the water though) for a couple of minutes.
Take your hands out and using an orange stick push back the cuticles(never trim cuticles). Then wipe off your hands using a thick towel making sure to get off every last bit of cream and water.

Who Needs A Basecoat When You Can Buff
Basecoat helps the colour go on smoothly and last longer.Blah Blah Blah.Better idea: using a nail buffer to bring on the shine without any chemicals.Nail Buffers usually come with 3-4 different grits to polish your nails and make them shine instantly.Plus it prevents yellowing of nails from darker nail paints and makes the nail paint adhere better. That is, it does the job of a basecoat just as well without having to wait for it to dry.
Currently I'm loving The Body Shop Nail Polishing Block (Review). It instantly makes my nails shine like nobody's business and the shine lasts for a good week.

Polish Ready Or Not
Buffed nails look great on their own but if you are a polish friendly (obsessed more like it) gal then pick your favourite shade and apply two really thin coats and let each coat air dry before reapplying.Five minutes after applying the second coat dunk your hand in ice cold water and let it air dry again.Though short nails can sport any colour they look their damned best in dark shades (think burgundy, plum, teal, navy, jade) or bright neons.Currently I'm obsessed with OPI: Lincoln Park After Dark which is a gorgeous black purple.

And ta-dah your nails have been prepped and primed for a night out. This home manicure hardly takes half an hour(including dry time) and is laziness personified.Plus is perfect for everyone from the busy working girl to the stay at home mom.

Comment and let me know your take on this fuss free way of pimping up your nails.

7 Best Supplements for Beauty

7 Best Supplements for Beauty
As anyone who has ever walked down the vitamin aisle can attest to, there is a vitamin and supplement for just about everything. But did you know that there are a few that are especially designed for beauty? To help give you a better idea, I have selected seven supplements to examine more closely that can help you look your best.
  1. Vitamin B – Whether it is the standard B or B12, all of the B-class vitamins are an essential part to building healthy hair and skin. It improves skin function, replaces dead cells, and does much more to keep a body beautiful.
  2. Fish oil – It isn’t just for heart health, the fatty acids found in it can also have wonderful anti-aging properties. The DHA in fish oil also helps your system feel full sooner, making it a natural anti-suppressant and a good choice for those trying to lose weight. It also helps with cholesterol, cancer risk, and much more.
  3. Biotin – Whether man or woman, hair loss or thinning is common as we get older. To help naturally counteract it, grab a biotin supplement. It is a form of Vitamin B, known as Vitamin B7 or Vitamin H. Not only can it help regrow hair, it can make hair shinier and even help with skin appearance.
  4. Vitamin C – Don’t just take it as part of a flu-fighting regimen. Vitamin C is also a powerful anti-oxidant which helps repair and even prevent skin damage. It also helps with energy production which can help keep you looking fit.
  5. Vitamin E – This one of the most commonly associated vitamins with skin health and for good reason. Vitamin E combats those free radicals which can damage skin. Whether taken as a supplement or as part of a lotion, it has many benefits, even protection from sun damage.
  6. Calcium – Nothing makes you look old quite like aging bones. The “hunched over” look can often be associated with osteoporosis, or a weakening of the bones. The best supplement for this is calcium, which can help strengthen bones. Be sure and take in combination with a Vitamin D supplement to ensure that it is absorbed properly.
  7. Multi-vitamin – It goes without saying that the multi-vitamin approach is the best to whatever ails you. They are the most complete way to get all your vitamins in pill form and can even include many of the above vitamins as part of their offering. If too expensive, check out the generic brand which can often be identical to its brand name counterpart.
Be sure and consult a physician or pharmacist if taking any vitamins or supplements, as they can have unintended side effects when taken with certain medications.

Bourjois Ultra Care Mascara In Noir Black

Freshly Shopped: MedPlusBeauty.com Haul & Review Bourjois Ultra Care MascaraI had a major eye infection back in the summers which has made my eyes really sensitive.I had been on the hunt for a mascara for sensitive eyes and this one was highly recommended.Sadly though the only Bourjois counter in my city was out of stock. So this was actually one of the first items in my cart.I have used it once and must say even though it's meant for sensitive eyes it does not compromise in the volume department.

Freshly Shopped: MedPlusBeauty.com Haul & Review Bourjois Rouge Hi-Tech Lip TintAnother product which has been out of stock for eternity.I'm not a huge fan of lip tints since I have dry lips so I was more interested in testing it's ability as a cheek tint.So far so good.A bit hard to blend but the colour is simply gorgeous and pops without looking OTT.

My Take: Motives Shape & Sculpt Duo

Motives Shape & Sculpt Duo Review Swatch
What It Claims
Double-sided compact that contains everything you need to highlight and contour like a pro. The dark side creates depth in areas such as the hollows of your cheeks. Using the light side brings the eye forward, highlighting areas such as the bridge of the nose or chin. Contouring can help accentuate and hide imperfect face structures, making you look your best every day.

Primary Benefits :
  • Two-in-one highlighter and matte contour powder
  • Luxurious formula that glides on smoothly to highlight and sculpt
  • Designed for all skin types
  • Non-irritant formula
  • Paraben, oil and fragrance free
How To Use Shape & Sculpt Duo

Motives Shape & Sculpt Duo Review Swatch
  • For Contouring, apply the darker shade with a stiff angled brush onto your jaw lines and around the temples in a C shape. Also sweep a light dusting just under the apples of your cheek.Try making a fish to locate the area under your cheek bones.
  • For Highlighting, apply to the highest points of your face- tip of your cheeks just under your eyes and the bridge of your nose(not the tip).Apply a little on the cupid's bow to give the impression of fuller lips.

The Good
  • Packing two products in one compact is a brilliant idea, specially since these two were made in heaven match.Highlighting and contouring cheat together into making your face look slimmer, which is exactly what this duo does.
  • Shape & Sculpt Duo's claim of luxurious finish is bang on. The powder glides on the skin beautifully and blends while without looking as if it is sitting on top of the skin.
  • Zero shimmer/glitter.Rather it has a lovely iridescence which gives a beautiful glow without looking OTT plus makes it ideal for sculpting and shaping.
Motives Shape & Sculpt Duo Review Swatch
  • Pigmentation is pretty good.Because of the creamy texture the brush picks up just the right amount of product. And since it blends well you need a small amount of product to work the magic.
Motives Shape & Sculpt Duo Review Swatch
  • Does not feel powdery or too heavy on skin, in fact it blends so well that it seems one with the skin much like a cream or liquid product.
  • Good staying power, around 4-5 hours after which it starts fading.
  • Packaging is cute and sturdy with a compact mirror, though on the bulkier side.

Motives Shape & Sculpt Duo Review Swatch
  • Price is justified for the quantity and quality.MAC has something similar which is priced slightly more than this though I think it has been discontinued.
  • Yay! for no parabens.
The Bad
  • Only available online, which is too bad since this is an excellent product.
  • I wish it were available in a cream format also, which would make it more versatile.
  • Single shade available which might be a problem for darker skin tones since the colour won't show.
Love It Or Chuck It
I love multi tasking products and the Shape & Sculpt Duo fits the bill.I have been on a constant hunt for the perfect contouring powder but our (read Bharatya Nari)obsession with cham cham unfortunately extends to makeup too, so it was impossible to find a matte contouring shade.Which is why I love the Shape & Sculpt Duo.The pigmentation is great with a beautiful creamy texture despite being in powder form. And behold: no cham cham of any kind just a beautiful iridescence which will compliment any skin tone.
